How much money do you need to retire early in Pakistan? Find your number

Retiring at 45 or 50 is not about earning a fortune. It is about one number: how much you need saved so that your money can pay your bills instead of your job. Here is how to work out that number for your own household, why inflation moves it, and the one choice that decides how soon you reach it.

In short

  • Your retirement number is about 25 times what your household spends in a year, or 33 times to be safer over a long retirement.
  • A family spending Rs. 150,000 a month needs roughly Rs. 4.5 crore to Rs. 5.94 crore in today's money.
  • How soon you get there depends mostly on the share of income you save: about 37 years at 20%, about 17 at 50%.
  • Protect the plan while you build it: if you die or fall ill on the way, your family needs the money anyway.

Step 1: what does your household actually spend?

Start with spending, not income. Add up a normal month: rent or house costs, groceries, bills, school fees, transport, help at home, family support, and an average for weddings, Eid and travel. Most people underestimate this by a fifth, so check three months of bank statements.

Then think about retirement spending: children may be educated, a house may be paid off, but health costs usually rise. Use the figure you expect to need, in today's rupees.

Step 2: multiply by 25, or 33 to be safe

A widely used rule of thumb, from research on how long retirement savings last, is that you can draw about 4% of your savings in the first year and raise it with inflation each year after, with a good chance of the money lasting about 30 years. 4% is one twenty-fifth, so the target is 25 times your yearly spending.

That research was done on other countries' markets, and an early retirement can last 40 years or more. Drawing 3% instead, which means saving 33 times your spending, gives you a much wider safety margin.

Your household spendsYearly spendingNumber at 25×Safer number at 33×
Rs. 100,000 a monthRs. 1,200,000Rs. 30,000,000 (3 crore)Rs. 39,600,000 (3.96 crore)
Rs. 150,000 a monthRs. 1,800,000Rs. 45,000,000 (4.5 crore)Rs. 59,400,000 (5.94 crore)
Rs. 200,000 a monthRs. 2,400,000Rs. 60,000,000 (6 crore)Rs. 79,200,000 (7.92 crore)
Rs. 300,000 a monthRs. 3,600,000Rs. 90,000,000 (9 crore)Rs. 118,800,000 (11.88 crore)
In today's money. 25 times yearly spending matches a 4% first-year withdrawal; 33 times matches 3%, the safer end for a long retirement.

Step 3: remember the number moves

The figures above are in today's money. By the time you retire, prices will be higher, so the rupee number will be higher too. That is why it is easier to plan in today's money and make sure your savings grow faster than prices.

Years from nowPrices multiply byRs. 150,000 a month today becomes
10 years2.2×about Rs. 324,000 a month
15 years3.2×about Rs. 476,000 a month
20 years4.7×about Rs. 699,000 a month
25 years6.8×about Rs. 1,027,000 a month
If prices rise by an assumed 8% a year. Pakistan's inflation has been far higher than that in some years and lower in others.

The one choice that decides when you get there

Your savings rate, the share of take-home pay you keep, matters more than your salary. Saving more does two things at once: it builds the pot faster, and it proves you can live on less, which shrinks the pot you need.

Share of income you saveYears until you can stop working
10%about 52 years
20%about 37 years
30%about 28 years
40%about 22 years
50%about 17 years
60%about 13 years
Starting from nothing, saving the same share of take-home pay every year at an assumed 5% a year above inflation, until savings reach 25 times what you spend in a year. The pattern matters more than the exact years.

How much to save each month

For a family spending Rs. 150,000 a month today, here is the monthly saving that builds the 25× number, depending on how many years you give it and how much faster than prices your savings grow.

Years until you stop3% above inflation5% above inflation7% above inflation
15 yearsRs. 198,300 a monthRs. 168,400 a monthRs. 142,000 a month
20 yearsRs. 137,100 a monthRs. 109,500 a monthRs. 86,400 a month
25 yearsRs. 100,900 a monthRs. 75,600 a monthRs. 55,600 a month
To build Rs. 4.5 crore in today's money (25 times Rs. 150,000 a month). Rates are assumed returns above inflation, so the monthly saving is in today's rupees and should rise with prices each year.

Build it in layers

  • An emergency fund first: three to six months of spending in a bank savings account or a National Savings account, so a surprise never forces you to sell investments.
  • Protection: life cover for the years your family depends on your income. See how much life insurance you need.
  • A guaranteed core that matures on your retirement date. A State Life Endowment can be set to mature the year you want to stop; see how to retire early with a State Life plan.
  • A growth layer for money you will not touch for 10 years or more, such as equity funds or shares. See how to start investing in Pakistan.
  • In the last five years before you stop, move enough to cover the first few years of retirement into safe places, so a bad year in the markets cannot delay you.

Things early retirees in Pakistan forget

  • Health costs. Without an employer's cover, you pay for hospital care yourself. Budget for it, or for health insurance.
  • Family obligations: children's weddings, parents' care and support for relatives often come in your 50s.
  • No pension. Most private-sector workers have no employer pension, so your savings are the whole plan.
  • Purpose. Many people "retire early" into a smaller business or part-time work, which takes pressure off the number.

Questions people ask

How much money do I need to retire at 45 in Pakistan?
About 25 to 33 times what your household spends in a year, in today's money. A family spending Rs. 100,000 a month would need roughly Rs. 3 crore to Rs. 3.96 crore.
Is the 4% rule safe in Pakistan?
Treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee. It comes from research on other countries' markets over about 30 years. For a longer or more uncertain retirement, plan on 3%, which means saving about 33 times your yearly spending.
Can I retire early on a middle-class salary?
It depends far more on how much you save than on what you earn. Saving half your income, if you can, gets most people there in under 20 years; saving a tenth takes most of a working life.
What happens to my family if I die before I reach my number?
That is the gap life cover fills. A savings plan such as State Life's Endowment pays your family the sum assured plus bonuses added so far, so the plan completes even if you cannot.
